Given their disastrous grandfinal-place finish in 2010, chances are Rydalmere coach Peter Basha would have been ecstatic had someone guaranteed his side a spot in the top four at the midpoint of 2011. But after winning 3 of their first sixth.
Rydalmere exploded like a shot out of a gun in 2011 with victories over the Dundas,Bualkham Hills before stalling with back-to-back defeats to the Granville and Castle Hill. But losing to those two sides is certainly no disgrace.
However, subsequent losses to the Granville,Castle Hill (again) and last week they won aganist dundas, plus the aberration of being monstered by the lowly Granville in Round 5, has cast a shadow of doubt over the Rydalmere’ resilience, not to mention their ability to compete with the top sides. (They have yet to beat a side in the top three, with their biggest scalp the seventh-placed dundas.)
Are Things Going To Plan? Sort of. The biggest unknowns for the Rydalmere at the end of last season were whether new buy Elie Faraj could make an immediate impact in the No.7 replacing the retired Ray Frangi, and whether Jescar Doueihi would sink or swim replacing Australian born Mark Abou-mehrez at striker/centre mid. Both have been sensational, with Jescar’s 6 goal elevating him to Granville Association top goal scorer.
One of the keys to Elie faraj’s smooth assimilation has been halves partner Charbel Basha who has been solid in the No.5.
Justin Doueihi has stamped himself representative quality and would have been in the mix for 1st grade If had he not been injured.
But despite the plusses the Rydalmere FC seem to lack focus and drift in and out of games, as the high number of points scored against them after halftime would indicate: their -7 points conceded in the soccer comp. Understandably, putting themselves under this much pressure has required a stern last quarter.
Injury Front… Nothing too much to complain about here. The Rydalmere have called on just 5 players to date – the five all but new faces. Their biggest blow came in Round 4 when workhorse Matthew Frangi injured his neck, which is expected to see him sit out another month before a return.
Former Mt Druitt striker also had achillies problems that have restricted him to six games. And right-mid thomas rizzo has played only five games with great form.
But their spine of striker Doueihi, defensive centre mid Basha, attacking mid Faraj and left wing besart has been left mostly intact, except for Faraj’s match injury from Round 9.
Predicted Finish… It’s tough to know what to make of the Rydalmere FC until they start beating top-notch oppositions. They get their chance to do that in the coming three rounds with return clashes with the Granvile and Lidcombe, plus the Castle Hill United. They also have stern away tests against the Dundas and Baulkham Hills. Still, they appear above the class of the teams milling around the middle of the competition so it would be a considerable surprise if they were to finish any lower (worse) than their current fourth spot.
